5 Fun Halloween Costumes

11 Oct

Halloween is just around the corner, and I am really excited about dressing up. Yes, I am 23 and still wear a costume every Halloween. I am not a big fan of store bought costumes (I hate the way the fabric always feels) and I find that you can save a lot of money by checking out your local thrift store and making your own costumes. So, here are 5 of my favorite homemade costume ideas.

1) Olive Hoover- Little Miss Sunshine

I LOVE the movie Little Miss Sunshine, largely due to Abigail Breslin’s hilarious performance as Olive Hoover. Olive’s unique style and quirky persona make her a great costume idea.

Olive’s trademark color is red. To recreate her costume you will need a fun red shirt, giant 80’s mom glasses (you know the type), a red sweatband, various assorted wristbands and/or bracelets, and most importantly red cowboy boots. You can wear pretty much any shorts on the bottom. In the movie she wears pink shorts and jean shorts, and sometimes she doesn’t match.

Make it a group costume- have someone dress in all white and play Olive’s uncle (Steve Carell)

2) Juno MacGuff- Juno

Juno is everyone’s favorite snarky  pregnant teenager, and a great Halloween costume.

To recreate Juno’s look you will need an orange striped shirt (or slinky t-shirt as a backup), a plaid skirt over faded jeans, a neutral zip-up hoodie, Chuck Taylors (or a similar style shoe), and a big blue Slurpee. For a fun accessory consider buying or making a hamburger phone. Wear your hair in a low ponytail, and of course stuff a pillow under your shirt for a pregnant looking belly.

Make it a group costume- Add a Paulie Bleeker!

3) Polygamists

I am sort of strangely obsessed with Polygamists- they just fascinate me. In fact, as I am writing this post I’m watching Sister Wives on TLC. I also love to watch Big Love, which is the main inspiration for this costume.

To pull this one off you will need a group of people, ideally one guy and three women. The man should wear white from head to toe, including a white cowboy hat. The women should all wear modest dresses in light or desaturated colors. It’s up to you if you want to be more traditional (like Nikki) or more modern (like Barb and Margene). At least one of the women should wear the traditional pouf-braid (not sure if it has a name) which will really pull the whole costume together. Everyone should also be wearing matching wedding bands.

4) Marty McFly- Back to the Future

This is an iconic character from an iconic movie. Everyone knows who Marty McFly is, making him an awesome Halloween costume.

To pull off Marty’s look the most important item is the red puffy vest! You will also need light or acid-wash jeans (as 80’s as you can find), Nike sneakers, a black and white plaid shirt, a jean jacket, and black suspenders. To take it to the next level find a skateboard, or make a hoverboard by using cardboard and neon paint. No Delorean needed, although that would be really really awesome!

Make it a group costume- Doc Brown of course! 1.21 Gigawatts!

5) Rosie the Riveter

This is what I am being this year. I have decided to pay homage to the poster girl for early feminism!

A lot of the stuff you need for this one may very well be in your closet already. All you need is a blue button down, red and white polka dot fabric for a head scarf, red lipstick, a pin or button of some sort (I’m using a Rosie pin), and navy pants with red suspenders. Realistically we don’t actually know what Rosie wears on the bottom, so you can take liberties with that part. Add a pin curl to the front of your hair and remember to pose in Rosie’s signature stance. You may also want to make a yellow backdrop of some sort. We Can Do It!

So, what are you planning to be for Halloween this year?
